The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of recipes back into distant history, in fact as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, sadly, these ancient records were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Closer to modern times, we have two books published in the fourteenth century : a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they have no connection with the indian curry that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals cooked for the rich and powerful of those days. During the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 1800s that cookery and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the time we get to the twentieth century, recipe books were starting to become popular as a result of increased literacy, more leisure time and a general increase in wealth. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
