The History of Recipes

Experts have proved the existance of recipes way back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. In practice though, generally, these early recipes were just simple pictorial instructions for preparing food.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful and blissful.

During the time of the Roman Empire a man called Apicius compiled some scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he informs us how the Roman chefs made use of many different herbs, including some familiar names like bay, fennel and parsley.

In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new culinary innovations created a surge in cookery books, many of which are kept safe in academic collections.

Over the following few hundred years, the rich families of Europe competed to serve the most exotic banquets, and consequentially chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on the site you are now reading.
