The History of Recipes

Recipes as an idea can be found way back into history, in truth as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Having said that, mostly, these old cook books were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.

In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful.

Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts which described recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. He tells us how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main course and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. He also tells us how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of many different herbs, including some familiar names such as bay, rue and parsley.

Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from the holy land, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new culinary innovations caused an increase in books on cookery, some of which are kept safe in private collections.

Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe tried to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy.

When we get to the 20th century, cookery publications are increasing in popularity as a result of better eduction, increased leisure time and disposable income.

The arrival of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like those on the site you are now reading.
