The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be tracked far back into antiquity, in fact as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful. Progressing into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into starters, entrees and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius informs us how the chefs of Roman times used many herbs, including some familiar names like basil, fennel and parsley. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from the East, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs was responsible for an outbreak in recipe manuscripts, some of which still exist in private collections. When we get to the twentieth century, cook books are starting to become popular mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having more leisure time and disposable income. The TV revolution gave us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Batter Dipped Fondue Meatballs recipe.
