The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be tracked far back into ancient history, in truth as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, generally, these early recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some stone tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there were two interesting cookery books which date from the 1300s : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are unconnected to the curry that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of meals served to the nobility of the time. Over the following few centuries, the rich and powerful families of the West tried to serve the most exotic banquets, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. The introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
