The History of Recipes

It is possible to trace the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, in fact as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early cook books were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to historians are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful.

Later, there are some books published in the 1300s - one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are nothing to do with the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared for the rich and powerful of those days.

Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and spices from Arab countries, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes created a surge in manuscripts on cookery, some of which are kept safe in private libraries.

During the following few hundred years, the powerful families of the West strove to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, trying out, and recording recipes of the day.

By the time we get to the 1900s, recipe books are greatly in demand as a result of more people being able to read, more free time and having more money.

The arrival of television brought us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site.
