The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of recipes back into history, in truth as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early recipes were just primitive pictorial instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful. Closer to modern times, there are two interesting recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century ; one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these have no connection with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of food enjoyed by the rich people of the time. During the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down the recipes of their peers. By the time we get to the twentieth century, recipe publications are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of better eduction, people having increased free time and being a little richer. |
