The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be found far back into the far past, in truth as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, these, early records were just very basic pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some documents which described recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he describes how the ancient Romans used many different aromatic flavors, including some familiar names for example thyme, rue and parsley. Over the next few hundred years, the powerful and rich tried to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes common in their social group. The arrival of TV gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
