The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be traced way back into history, certainly as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, generally, these early cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few documents describing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, something we still use today. This early Roman chef recounts how the ancient chefs were skilled in the use of many herbs and spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example bay, mint and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from the East, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices prompted a surge in manuscripts on cookery, most of which are now in private cookery archives. The TV revolution brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
