The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to trace the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into the far past, in truth as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. In practice though, these, ancient records were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a number of documents which described recipes prepared by the Romans. In his works, he tells us how the roman meals were split into appetizers, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. He also informs us how the Romans were skilled in the use of many aromatic flavors, including many that are still in use today such as bay, rue and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from the Middle-East, including parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes led to a torrent in manuscripts on food, many of which still exist in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
