Beef & Vegetable Soup Recipe

Ingredients

1 tbsp corn oil
1 lb stewing beef, cut into 1/2-inch cub, es
1 lb sweet italian sausage links, sliced
1 can tomatoes (28 ounces)
3 cup water
1 cup chopped onion
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp worcestershire sauce
2 large potatoes, peeled, cut into 1/2-inch, cubes
1 cup sliced celery


Directions

In a large, heavy kettle, heat the oil; add the beef and brown on all
sides. Remove the meat with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the
sausage to the kettle and brown on all sides. Drain off the drippings
from the kettle. Add the tomatoes, water, onion, salt,
Worcestershire sauce and the reserved browned beef. Bring to a boil,
then reduce the heat; simmer, covered, until almost tender, about 1
1/2 hours. Add the cubed potatoes and sliced celery; simmer until the
vegetables and meat are tender, about
20 minutes more.

The History of Recipes

Written cooking instructions as an idea can be traced way back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. However, mostly, these ancient cook books were just primitive pictorial recipes for meal preparation.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians are a few clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful.

Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have a couple of recipe books which appeared in the 1300s ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are not about the indian food that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the nobility of the period.

Over the following few centuries, the rich families of Europe competed to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes of the day.

When we get to the 1900s, recipe books were highly popular mostly as a result of increased literacy, more spare time and having more money to spend.
