1/2 tsp caraway seeds
1 brown sugar

The History of Recipes

Historians have traced the existence of recipes way back into the distant past, in fact as far back into history as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Having said that, mostly, these old records were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.

Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he tells us how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of many herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example bay, rue and dill.

Over the next few centuries, the powerful families of the West strove to serve the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, verifying, and recording recipes of the day.

The introduction of television brought us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site.
