The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of meal recipes far back into the distant past, in truth as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians is a series of stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `wonderful`. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his works, he recounts how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and dessert, something we still use today. Additionally, he tells us how the Roman cooks made use of a wide range of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks such as bay, fennel and parsley. Later, we find some books dating from the 1300s - one book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these are nothing to do with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared for the rich and powerful of the time. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted a surge in publications on food, most of which are kept safe in private collections. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookbooks were greatly in demand due to higher levels of literacy, more free time and having more money. The arrival of television gave us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
