The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to prove the history of written cooking instructions back into antiquity, in fact as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created some scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were divided into starters, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. He also informs us how the Romans used a good variety of spices, including many that are still in use today such as basil, mint and dill. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from Arab cooking, including parsley and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices was responsible for an eruption in recipe books, many of which still exist in private cookery archives. By the time we get to the 20th century, cooking publications were highly popular as a result of more people being able to read, more leisure time and having more money. |
