The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of written recipes back into the distant past, at least as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. In practice though, generally, these ancient records were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of scripts describing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he describes how the Roman cooks made use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including many that are still in use today for example basil, rue and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many spices and herbs from the holy land, including parsley and basil. These new culinary innovations led to an explosion in books on cooking, some of which are now in private libraries. By the time we get to the 1900s, recipe publications were in great demand, mostly due to better eduction, people having more spare time and disposable income. The arrival of television brought us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
