The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked way back into history, in fact as far into history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, in the main part, these old records were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians is a collection of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were some books which date from the fourteenth century - a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these have no connection with the indian food that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of meals served to the upper classes of the period. Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe strove to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing popular recipes of the day. The TV revolution brings us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on this site. |
