The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, at least as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, generally, these ancient recipes were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful. As we move on, there are some recipe books which date from the fourteenth century - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are not about the curry that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals eaten by the rich people of those days. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including coriander, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices was responsible for a torrent in manuscripts on food, the majority of which still exist in academic collections. During the following few hundred years, the powerful families of the West competed to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and cookery books really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes common in their social group. The arrival of television brought us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
