The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be traced far back into ancient history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. However, generally, these old records were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Progressing into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were split into starters, main course and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. He also informs us how the Romans used a wide range of spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise like basil, mint and asafoetida. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from the holy land, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices led to an increase in manuscripts on food, some of which still exist in private libraries. When we get to the 1900s, cookery books are highly popular as a result of better eduction, more spare time and disposable income. The arrival of TV gave us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this site. |
