The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of recipes way back into the far past, in fact as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, early recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
During Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were split into appetizers, entrees and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also tells us how the ancient chefs made use of many spices and herbs, including some that we all recognise such as thyme, mint and dill. During the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of Wesstern Europe strove to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and cookery books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
We hope you enjoy this Beet & Apple Salad recipe.
