The History of Recipes
Historians have traced the existence of recipes way back into the distant past, certainly as far as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, these, early cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a few documents detailing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. This early Roman chef describes how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including some familiar names for example bay, fennel and asafoetida. In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices like basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, some of which are now in private libraries. The introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
