The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes way back into ancient history, at least as far back into history as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, generally, these old records were just primitive pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are some ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `wonderful`. Moving on, we have some recipe books from the fourteenth century ; a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals eaten by the upper classes. During the following few centuries, the rich families of Europe competed with each other to offer the best banquets, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections increased in prestige. However, it was during the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and publishing popular recipes of the day. By the advent of the 1900s, recipe books were in great demand, due to more people being able to read, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth. The revolution that is television brought us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on this recipe site. |
