The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into ancient history, in truth as far into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful. Later on, we have two interesting recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are not about the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of meals cooked for the rich and wealthy people of that period. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices was responsible for an increase in books on cookery, most of which are kept safe in private collections. For the centuries that followed, the upper-class families of Europe tried to offer the most exotic meals, and because of this cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
