The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existence of recipes far back into ancient history, in truth as far into history as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early cook books were just simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to food historians are some tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful. As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents which described recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. He recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also describes how the chefs of Roman times made use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including many that are still in use today like thyme, rue and asafoetida. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there were two interesting recipe books from the 14th Century : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are unconnected to the spicy food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful of that time. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes led to a torrent in manuscripts on cookery, most of which are now in private libraries. The introduction of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
