The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to trace the history of written cooking instructions far back into the distant past, in fact as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, generally, these early recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Moving on, there were some books dating from the 14th Century : a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are unconnected to the indian curry that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of food cooked for the rich and powerful of those days. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like parsley and basil. These new culinary innovations created an explosion in manuscripts on food, many of which are kept safe in private libraries. The arrival of television brought us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Berry Gazpacho recipe.
