The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be traced far back into the far past, certainly as far as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, these, old cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some ancient tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we find a couple of cookery books which appeared in the 14th Century : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books have no connection with the curry that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of meals cooked for the upper classes of those days. Over the next few hundred years, the families of Europe competed to lay on the most extravagent meals, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. The arrival of TV gave us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site. |
