The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of written recipes back into the distant past, in truth as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these ancient recipes were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians are some tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful. As we move into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts describing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. He also tells us how the ancient chefs used a good variety of herbs, including some familiar names such as bay, fennel and dill. During the next few centuries, the rich families of Europe competed with each other to serve the most exotic meals, and because of this the best chefs and their recipes were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe publications really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the advent of the 20th century, cooking publications are in high demand, mostly due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased free time and having more money. The revolution that is television brought us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
