The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, in truth as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, something we still use today. Additionally, he informs us how the ancient chefs used a good variety of aromatic flavours, including some familiar names such as thyme, rue and asafoetida. For the centuries that followed, the upper-class families of the West strove to serve the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, the best cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of the TV brings us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
