The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existance of recipes way back into ancient history, at least as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, sadly, these ancient cook books were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have some recipe books which were published in the 14th Century - a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared for the nobility of those days. Over the following few hundred years, the rich families of Europe competed with each other to offer the most extravagent meals, and because of this cooks and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the arrival of the 20th century, cooking publications are in great demand, as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having more free time and having more disposable income. The introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Brownie Oatmeal Gems recipe.
