The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be found back into history, in truth as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. Having said that, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius describes how the cooks of Roman times were skilled in the use of many herbs and spices, including many that are still in use today such as thyme, rue and asafoetida. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The arrival of TV brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
