1 cup sifted all-purpse flour
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup butter
1 1/2 cup firmly packed light brown
1 sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup unsalted peanuts, chopped
1 package peanut butter chips
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt
onto wax paper. Beat butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla in a medium-size
bowl with electric mixer until fluffy. Stir in dry ingredients; beat
until smooth. Fold in 1/2 cup of the chopped nuts. Pour into greased
13x9x2 inch pan. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 30 minutes.
Remove pan from oven to wire rack; sprinkle with peanut butter chips.
Let stand about 5 minutes, then spread evenly with a small metal
spatula. Sprinkle with remaining nuts, patting down gently. Cool; cut
into bars

The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of written recipes far back into history, certainly as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, these, early cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move on, we find a couple of cookery books which date from the 14th Century : one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are unconnected to the indian food that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich and wealthy people of that period. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the holy land, such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas caused an eruption in recipe publications, most of which still exist in academic collections. During the following few hundred years, the powerful and rich houses competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and consequentially cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The arrival of television gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site. |
