The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes far back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and maybe further still. However, these, early records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a series of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful. Moving on, we find a couple of recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these books are not about the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared for the rich and wealthy people of that time. During the following few centuries, the powerful and rich houses competed to serve the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, trying out, and recording recipes of the day. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookery books were in high demand, mostly due to more people being able to read, more spare time and a general increase in wealth. |
