The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` way back into history, at least as far into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, sadly, these old cook books were just basic pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts detailing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, something we still use today. Aspicius also describes how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of many different herbs and spices, including many that are still in use today for example thyme, mint and dill. For the decades that followed, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed to offer the best banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookery publications are in great demand, due to more people being able to read, more free time and having more disposable income. |
