The History of Recipes

Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked back into the distant past, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, these, early recipes were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.

In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics are some clay tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful.

Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are a couple of books from the 1300s : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are nothing to do with the curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the upper classes of that time.

Over the succeeding few centuries, the powerful families of Europe strove to lay on the best banquets, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time.

The TV revolution brought us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this site.
