The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of meal recipes far back into history, in truth as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these old cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful. Later, we find two interesting cookery books which appeared in the 1300s - a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are nothing to do with the spicy food that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of food served to the upper classes. During the following few hundred years, the powerful and rich houses tried to lay on the most exotic meals, and because of this chefs and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day. By the time we get to the 1900s, cook books were increasing in popularity mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, increased leisure time and having more disposable income. |
