1/3 cup bulgur
2 tsp olive oil
4 cup onions, sliced (4 medium)
2 tsp sugar
2 tsp vinegar, balsamic
1 package harvest burger, original, prepared according to pkg
2 tbsp tomato paste
1/4 cup parsley, fresh, chopped
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper, freshly ground
4 hamburger buns, split and toasted
1 lettuce for garnish
Directions
In a small bowl, combine bulgur with 1/2 cup warm water; let stand
for 30 minutes, or until the water is absorbed and the bulgur is
tender. Prepare the Harvest Burger in a medium bowl. Set aside while
it absorbs water.
Meanwhile, in a large nonstick skillet, heat oil over low heat. Add
onions and sugar; saute until the onions are very tender and golden,
about 15 minutes. Stir in 1/4 cup water and vinegar. Season with salt
and keep warm.
Prepare a grill or preheat the broiler. Combine the Harvest Burger
and bulgar in the same bowl. Add tomato paste, parsley, salt and
pepper; mix thoroughly but lightly. Shape into 8 patties. Grill or
broil on a lightly oiled rack until browned and cooked through, about
5 minutes per side. Place the patties on buns, top with the
caramelized onions, and garnish with lettuce. Serves 8

The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into history, certainly as far as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these old records were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to historians are a few tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a number of scripts detailing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were separated into starters, main meal and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius recounts how the ancient cooks made use of many aromatic flavors, including some familiar names like basil, mint and asafoetida. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes was responsible for an eruption in recipe manuscripts, many of which are kept safe in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as this. |
