The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked back into distant history, at least as far as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, generally, these ancient records were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe found, according to food historians are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are two interesting books dating from the 14th Century ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books have no connection with the curry that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of food on the menus of the upper classes of that time. Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from the East, including parsley and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, the majority of which still exist in private collections. Over the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipe collections could command a high salary. However, it was during the 1800s that formal cookery and cookery books really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and publishing the recipes of their peers. The TV revolution brought us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on our site. |
