The History of Recipes

Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be observed back into the far past, in truth as far as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.

Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians are some stone tablets in Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel wonderful.

Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have two interesting cookery books which were published in the fourteenth century : one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are nothing to do with the indian curry that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the rich people of those days.

In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including parsley, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs prompted a surge in books on cookery, the majority of which are now in private cookery archives.

Over the following few centuries, the rich families of the West tried to lay on the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best cooks and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and cookery books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collecting, verifying, and publishing recipes of the day.

The arrival of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site.
