The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` far back into ancient history, in fact as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. In practice though, generally, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts showing how to cook the recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into appetizers, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also tells us how the Roman cooks were skilled in the use of many spices, including some familiar names like basil, fennel and dill. For the decades that followed, the rich and powerful families of the West strove to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
