The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of written recipes far back into distant history, in fact as far back into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history are a few stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were divided into appetizers, entrees and afters, something we still use today. This early Roman chef tells us how the ancient Romans made use of a good variety of spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as basil, mint and dill. As we move on, we find some books which appeared in the 1300s - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these two books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of the time. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the holy land, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new foods and tastes led to a surge in cookery books, most of which are now in private collections. The revolution that is television gave us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
