The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be traced far back into antiquity, certainly as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, sadly, these ancient records were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe found, according to experts are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful. During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were divided into starters, main course and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. This early Roman chef recounts how the Roman chefs made use of many spices, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as thyme, rue and parsley. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the Middle-East, including basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs was responsible for a torrent in books on cooking, some of which are now in private collections. When we get to the 1900s, cook books are highly popular mostly as a result of increased literacy, more leisure time and disposable income. The arrival of TV gave us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
