The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of meal recipes way back into history, certainly as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these old cook books were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are some ancient tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful. As we move on, there were a couple of interesting recipe books published in the 1300s : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of food on the menues of the rich and powerful of that period. During the next few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Europe competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group. By the advent of the 20th century, cookery publications are in high demand, as a result of more people being able to read, more spare time and being a little richer. |
