The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of `recipes` far back into antiquity, in truth as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, mostly, these early cook books were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing food.
As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts which described recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius informs us how the Romans used many herbs, including a few you will know for example thyme, mint and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new spices and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted an outbreak in manuscripts on cooking, some of which still exist in private collections. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
