The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked back into the distant past, in truth as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Having said that, in the main part, these old cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are a couple of interesting cookery books published in the 1300s - a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books have no connection with the curry that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the tables of the nobility of that time. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and spices from the holy land, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices created an explosion in manuscripts on food, most of which still exist in private libraries. The TV revolution brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on our site. |
