The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of meal recipes way back into the far past, in truth as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these ancient recipes were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of documents which described recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were split into appetizers, main course and desserts, something we still use today. This early Roman chef informs us how the Romans were skilled in the use of many different spices, including some that we all recognise such as basil, rue and parsley. Later, we have a couple of interesting cookery books which appeared in the 1300s - a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are not about the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared for the rich people of the period. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices created an increase in books on cookery, many of which still exist in academic collections. By the time we get to the 20th century, cooking books are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of increased literacy, leisure time and a general increase in wealth. The arrival of television brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
