The History of Recipes

Historians have proved the existence of recipes way back into ancient history, certainly as far as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Having said that, in the main part, these early recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful.

As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have a couple of cookery books from the 1300s - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these have no connection with the spicy food that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared for the rich and powerful of those days.

Over the next few centuries, the rich families of Europe competed to lay on the best banquets, and because of this chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century the formal cooking and cookery books really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time.

The introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on this site.
