The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be observed way back into the far past, in fact as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, mostly, these early recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we have a couple of books which appeared in the fourteenth century - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these have no connection with the indian curry that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of meals eaten by the rich and powerful. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the upper-class families of Europe strove to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day. When we get to the twentieth century, cooking books are greatly in demand mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having increased spare time and disposable income. The TV revolution brings us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
