The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of meal recipes far back into ancient history, in truth as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early recipes were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled some scripts which described recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also describes how the ancient chefs used a wide range of herbs, including some familiar names like thyme, mint and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from the holy land, including spices like basil and coriander. These new spices and herbs led to a torrent in recipe books, some of which are now in private libraries. The arrival of television brings us TV cooks and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
