The History of Recipes

Academics have traced the existence of recipes back into antiquity, certainly as far as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early cookbooks were just basic pictorial recipes for food preparation.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated.

Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of documents detailing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he recounts how the meals were split into starters, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also informs us how the cooks of Roman times used a wide range of spices, including a few you will know for example bay, mint and asafoetida.

In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as parsley and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas was responsible for an explosion in cookery books, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives.

By the arrival of the twentieth century, cooking books were highly popular mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having more free time and a general increase in wealth.

The introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site.
