The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of meal recipes way back into history, at least as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, sadly, these early cook books were just very simple pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Later, there were some recipe books published in the fourteenth century : a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books are nothing to do with the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather accounts of the types of food enjoyed by the nobility of that period. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from the holy land, including spices like basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations created an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, most of which still exist in private cookery archives. The arrival of television brings us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this site. |
