The History of Recipes
Historians have tracked the existence of recipes far back into the far past, at least as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, sadly, these early recipes were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we find a couple of books which date from the 1300s - one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared for the nobility of that period. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices led to an increase in manuscripts on food, some of which are kept safe in private libraries. Over the succeeding few centuries, the families of Europe strove to serve the most exotic meals, and because of this chefs and their recipes were greatly in demand. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, trying out, and recording the recipes of their peers. The TV revolution gave us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
